Fun facts about hair

As you know it’s National Hair Loss Awareness month and I’ve been talking about hair each week. This is my third post about it and I thought it would be nice to lighten things up a bit. I say with confidence that there are solutions to hair loss and I think I have a few of  them here at the clinic. So before we get into the bespoke programs for those suffering from hair loss, I’ve had a dig around to bring some of the best hair facts I could find. Here’s my top 20:

  1. All your hair follicles were formed when you were a 5 month fetus
  2. Every drug, vitamins, mineral or medicine from your blood stream makes its way into your hair
  3. Black hair is the most common hair color in the world while red is the rarest with only 1% of the population having it
  4. Blondes have the highest amount of hair strands at 146,000
  5. Redheads have the lowest amount of hair stands at 86,000
  6. If a man never shaved with, his beard would grow to over 30 feet in his life time
  7. A single, healthy strand of hair can withstand about 6.5 pounds
  8. A strand of hair is stronger than a copper wire of equivalent diameter
  9. The average lifespan of an eye lash is 150 days
  10. The word shampoo comes from the Hindu-Urdu word, ‘champna’ which means to massage
  11. Xie Jiuping had the longest female hair 18 ft 5.5 inches
  12. The scientific term for split ends is “trichoptilosis”
  13. Hair doesn’t grow after death
  14. Human hair is used to clean up oil spills
  15. Healthy hair can be stretched up to 30% of it’s length when wet
