It's wine time!

There are always debates going on about what is good for you and what isn’t. One day they say a glass of wine is great for the heart due to the antioxidants, the next day they say don’t drink too much because it’s bad for you. So you have to wonder which will it be today? Recently I was reading an interesting report from NUTRITION 2023, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Boston. Apparently drinking two glasses of dealcoholized (contains no alcohol) muscadine wine daily improved the elasticity and water retention of skin compared with those who drank a placebo.

The benefits comes from chemical compounds called polyphenols that naturally occur in many plants and are present in muscadine grapes that grow in the southeastern US.Lindsey Christman the PhD who conducted the research with Liwei Gu, PhD, professor of food chemistry and functional food at the University of Florida, said, “our study suggests that muscadine wine polyphenols have potential to improve skin conditions, specifically elasticity and transepidermal water loss, in middle aged and older women.” Some of the other goodies present in the wine include anthocyanins, quercetin and ellagic acid that can help decrease inflammation and oxidative stress. That means antiaging via increased elasticity and an improved skin barrier that prevents water loss. The results showed skin smoothness and less inflammation seen in participants. But before you go and buy a few cases of muscadine wine remember that it contains alcohol and wouldn’t have the effects seen in the study. Since the researchers removed the alcohol component of the wine they were left with the polyphenols.

It doesn’t mean there won’t be great advances using the muscadine grape in skincare. If you can’t wait that long then there are several methods for improving skin health and elasticity. I recommend IPL and Morpheus8 RF Microneedling as just a couple of hard hitters that take off the years!
